How to use them: repairing upholstery on an armchair
Renovating an armchair is a true art that combines precision, know-how and good tools . Among the essential elements of this renovation, the choice of materials and upholstery techniques is crucial. Whether you opt for foam or horsehair padding, BOHIN houzeaux are perfect allies for fixing support fabrics and ensuring a flawless finish . Here is an example of a detailed guide to repairing the upholstery of an armchair, combining foam and horsehair padding techniques.
1. Disassembling the Armchair
- Remove the old fabric : Start by removing any existing fabric, staples, or old nails (nails). Use a staple remover to carefully remove everything that held the old fabric together.
- Structural inspection : Check that the chair's structure is stable and undamaged. If repairs are necessary (e.g., tightening screws or wood joints) or surface treatments, carry them out before starting the upholstery.
2. Foam Padding
- Cutting the foam : If the chair needs new upholstery, start by cutting the foam to the shape and size that will fit the seat, backrest and armrests. You can use high density foam to ensure good comfort and durability.
- Fixing the foam : place the foam on the frame of the chair. Use a special foam adhesive to hold the foam in place before attaching the support fabric.
3. Horsehair Padding: Traditional Upholstery
-
Strapping : Attach the crossed straps to the bottom of your chair. Attach the straps one by one, maintaining the same tension for each strap using the houzeaux BOHIN and to a pull straps .
- Sewing and hoisting the springs : attach springs to the chair with hoisting rope and using large seeds .
- Laying the strong canvas, sewing the springs : there strong canvas overhangs the springs, keeps them fixed to the structure using stitches made with curved needles and of the stitching string , and provides support to the horsehair trim .
- Horsehair setting : THE horsehair is a natural fiber used to bring from support and firmness to padding . Arrange the layers of horsehair (which can be cut to the size of the different parts of the chair) on the foam or directly on the wooden structure to reinforce the seat and backrest. Secure the horsehair in a case of burlap .
- Packaging : fix the horsehair in a case of burlap . Use linen thread to hold the horsehair layers in place. This ensures that the horsehair will stay positioned throughout use. The houzeaux and a horsehair puller allow you to homogenize the horsehair in its packaging.
- Background: The sewing of the packaging and the horsehair filling helps to keep the horsehair evenly homogenized.
- Whitewashing : apply white canvas, first maintaining even tension on the fabric using the Houzeaux BOHIN . Secure it with seeds.
5. Laying the fabric
Once the upholstery is securely attached to the frame, you can move on to applying the embellishment fabric (the visible fabric that will give your chair its final aesthetic). Trim the fabric with enough room to cover the edges and ensure a clean finish.
Make sure to maintain a regular and even tension of the embellishment fabric over the entire surface of the armchair using the BOHIN holsters.
6. Finishing
If your chair has decorative metal studs, you can place them around the chair to add a decorative touch. Be careful not to damage the fabric.
7. Final Control
Make sure the chair is comfortable and the padding is evenly distributed.
