The fashion sewing needle is generally used for basting, gathering, and overcasting. Fashion needles (or millinery needles) are longer than the classic sewing needle. They are also used for making pleats. Their fashion name comes as much from sewing workshops as from their use by milliners to make hats. It is their length that makes them very useful for basting. You can easily make large stitches and go very quickly!
The numbering corresponds to the size of each needle, with No. 3 being the longest and thickest and No. 10 the shortest and thinnest for the same needle family. The numbers should be selected according to the size of the fabric and the thread used.
Why baste? As a beginner in sewing, we sometimes think that basting is a waste of time. However, it has many advantages! Basted fabric is easier to sew because it holds better. And then, when trying on a project in progress, it's more comfortable and less dangerous than using pins. For fine fabrics, such as viscose, which are also very slippery, basting allows the seam to hold throughout the final seam. On the other hand, for very thick fabrics, and especially tailored garments, basting allows the elements to take their place and keep them despite the thicknesses that are sometimes difficult to pin. Basting makes sewing easy!
